What an extraordinary little Babykin!
Every once in a while, after many years of collecting, a doll comes along that makes you look twice — and then look again.
This beautiful early Effanbee Patsy Babykin combines two features that are seldom encountered: the wonderful Magic/Magnetic Hands and an exceptionally unusual original RABBIT FUR wig.
At first glance, one might easily think her lovely warm auburn-brown wig is caracul — itself a very scarce variation on Babykin. A closer look, however, reveals something even more unusual: this is actually RABBIT FUR.
In all my years of collecting Effanbee Babykin dolls, I have never seen another Magnetic Hands Babykin with a rabbit fur wig.
She has been in my personal collection for many years, and she is truly a special little girl.
MAGIC HANDS!
One of the most delightful Babykin variations is Effanbee's Magic/Magnetic Hands baby. Magnets incorporated into her hands allow her to "hold" little objects — such fun!
I have made several little period-style toys especially for her to demonstrate her Magic Hands: two red balls in different sizes, a little bell rattle, and an American flag. These are newly made display accessories and are not original Effanbee pieces except for the bell rattle which did come with these magnetic hands Babykins.
As you can see in the photographs, she happily holds them — and that large red ball looks almost impossible perched there in her tiny hand!
AND THAT WONDERFUL WIG...
Her original rabbit fur wig is simply fabulous.
Full, soft and beautifully preserved, it is a lovely warm auburn-brown shade with wonderful natural waves and curls framing her face. It is particularly striking with her brilliant blue eyes and rosy complexion.
This is an extraordinarily unusual Babykin wig variation and, as noted above, one I personally have never encountered on another Magnetic Hands Babykin.
SUCH A BEAUTIFUL FACE...
Her face is exceptionally lovely, with a smooth, fresh original finish, wonderful rosy cheek coloring, delicate brows and lashes, and gorgeous bright blue eyes.
Her face is flawless in finish except for a small amount of missing paint on her lower lip, mentioned for accuracy and clearly shown in the photographs.
She has such a sweet expression — and that magnificent rabbit fur hair gives her an entirely different personality from the Babykin dolls we more commonly see.
Her composition body is also exceptionally nice, with only very light underpaint crazing on the body itself. Her arms and legs retain a beautiful smooth finish and lovely original coloring.
AN IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTE...
Both of her hands have had professional repair/restoration and repainting by my longtime doll restorer, Mark Hartley.
The work was done many years ago while she was in my collection.
I always want my collectors to know exactly what they are purchasing, so the restoration is fully disclosed here and her hands are shown clearly in the photographs.
Most importantly, her delightful Magic/Magnetic Hands feature remains intact, as demonstrated with the little toys included with her.
HER ORIGINAL WARDROBE...
This little girl comes with a wonderful selection of original clothing, including the charming sheer dotted dress trimmed in pale blue that looks absolutely beautiful with her coloring. She also has her wonderful pale pink coat and matching large lace-trimmed bonnet, her sweet blue-and-cream knitted pieces, undergarments and shoes as shown.
Her slip is a replacement; the remainder of her clothing is original.
Please study all of the photographs, as they are an important part of the description and show both her condition and the wonderful wardrobe included with her.
The little magnetic toys shown — the two balls, and flag — were made by me especially for her and will, of course, accompany her to her new home, along with the original bell rattle.
A truly unusual Babykin — Magic Hands, an extraordinary original rabbit fur wig, beautiful original coloring, and a wonderful original wardrobe.
For the serious Effanbee collector, she represents one of those fascinating variations that can make collecting these dolls so rewarding.
After many years in my own collection, Ms. Rabbit Fur Magic Hands is ready to work her magic in someone else's.💕
