Extremely Rare Georgene Averill Kris Kringle Santa Claus Doll.
Vintage 1940s, this soft rose flannel Kris Kringle doll was produced by Georgene Novelty, Inc. in the late 1940s - early 1950s. Just 11" high, he has a vinyl / rubber head and cloth body with a dusty rose colored flannel suit; a white wool scarf is attached. He has a black leatherette belt with silver buckle, and black leatherette boots, which are sewn on. There is a 'silver' junglebell sewn to the end of his little pointed cap and on the front of the doll (needs perhaps to be more firmly attached). He has a curly, mock fur beard with a face that blesses us with a wonderful smile; his eyes 'twinkle' are are brightly shining as he looks up at you.
This darling stuffed doll can stand or sit; as there is no internal structure he is relatively better at sitting.
Georgene Novelties, Inc was one of the names that the Averill Manufacturing Company, a New York, USA doll manufacturer operated under. Other names included: Averill Mfg. Corp., Paul Averill, Inc., Brophy Doll Company (in Canada), Georgene Averill, and Madame Hendren. It was begun by husband and wife team James "Paul" Averill and wife Georgene Hopf Averill. Georgene or Madame Georgene was the doll designer. Averill collaborated with Borgfeldt, Horsman and several other doll artists, they are probably best known for cloth Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls designed by Johnny Gruelle and the Bonnie Babe doll. A company slogan was: America's best loved dolls are made by "Georgene".
Condition: Excellent, especially for the age. His flannel suit is the original color of a soft rose. Looking inside of his hat and deep under his coat, the color is soft rose throughout. The boots and belt are excellent. His vinyl/rubber head is supple. The colors on his face are excellent and his eyes are bright. Overall a great piece.
Amazing addition to any doll nursery!
