Listing is for one whopping big -- 28" -- all original genuine Lenci 1930s JACKIE COOGAN doll with an EXTREMELY RARE googly mask face. This wonderful Lenci character doll is an estate find. I acquired him along with another extremely rare Lenci doll that I am offering in another listing.
This is a very large and very rare Lenci early doll. He measures about 28" tall and comes to you in his COMPLETE outfit. Outfit includes his lovely felt bouquet of flowers for his girl (whomever she may be). I have researched this fella' on the internet and of course, Nancy Lazenby's highly valued book all about Lenci dolls. The two published auctions over the last years show him without flowers and another without his cap.... so, I guess rare to find so complete.
His outfit is of course made of the highest quality wool felt and all in excellent condition but for the separation in his cotton plaid shirt you see under his left suspender. He is stuffed with excelsior and in excellent shape.
His face is made of heavy celluloid; the facial features are all original and unretouched with crazing; I did not try to clean him as I am unfamiliar with the process to do that safely and/or effectively. I leave that to the new owner's discretion. His VERY RARE google eyes are glass over what was at one time moveable pupils; please note the glass lenses are broken and the pupils no longer move. If I were to keep him I would probably restore the eyes as that seems would be easy enough to do by someone with confidence in that area. I prefer to leave him 'as found'.
The coloring in his face is bright and complete. He has double layer applied felt ears and felt black hair. In my research one of the descriptions I ran across dated him to the 1930s and stated he was only made one year, and had the original Lenci tags attached for provenance to that statement. This boy has no tags and as the information regarding him is not definitive... a couple of other Jackie Coogan dolls were produced by Lenci but this is the rarest with these special eyes.
Hi is not perfect, but perfectly wonderful and keeps good company.
