RARE --1930s Effanbee EARLY SUGAR BABY 20" Composition Doll
This is a wonderful 20" Effanbee SUGAR Baby composition and cloth doll from the 1930's.
She comes dressed in a beautiful ensemble made especially for her by some lucky little girl's Mom or other dear friend or relative, from a popular 1930s pattern. These handmade outfits are SO SPECIAL, always made of beautiful fabrics and stitched with loving care... silk embroidered accents and French Val Lace add to these special outfits. The dress on this set is made of white cotton batiste fabric with puff sleeves, embroidered placket, and lace trim; closes at the back with a small handsewn snap. The coat and bonnet set are made of wool challis material that lends a soft 'hand' and draping quality to the garment. Two pearl buttons invite you to close the coat with self-thread loop closures. Pretty silk thread flowers embellish the coat and bonnet.
Note: the bonnet looks to be lighter in my photos, but it is not faded... just a little game my camera is playing with the lighting.
SUGAR BABY is in Excellent Condition... there is no paint loss other than a very few gentle rubs to her lovely dark brown molded hair. Otherwise her composition is smooth with little NO CRAZING or flaws to her body. All facial features are clearly defined with beautiful coloring. Her only restoration is a set of replaced irises; her lashes appear to all be intact and even. A couple of very light craze lines to her face separate her from classifying her as a mint doll. Very rare in this condition with original clothing. Her brown molded hair is nearly perfect.
Appropriately marked on the nape of her neck: Effanbee / Sugar Baby
You can read more about Sugar Baby in Ursala Mertz' book, "Collector's Encyclopedia of Composition Dolls, Vol II" on page 79.
Her cloth body is CLEAN and IMMACULATE -- she poses and drapes nicely with LOTS OF PERSONALITY.
A very desirable baby and highly sought after -- with the holidays behind us, this is a great time to celebrate and add baby to your nursery.... Valentine's Day? Birthday? Mother's Day??? All of the above???
