What an ADORABLE and RARE little doll baby... this is a 1937 all composition LITTLE CHERUB doll in exemplary fully restored CONDITION... and she is absolutely incredible. She stands just 17" -- a prize for any collector of composition dolls.
Manufactured by the Averill Doll Company which was started by Georgene Averill of the 'Madame Hendren' line of dolls, this exceptionally darling baby was designed by an employee of Averill... Harriet Flanders. Harriet originally wrote a book entitled "Little Cherub" and the doll was subsequently designed to accompany the book... I will include a fine reproduction copy of with your purchase.
Very few of these little ones were made, and fewer still have survived well over the years. She is the largest of the two sizes made (smaller one just 12"). She has been completely restored by the best of the best. These are her original eyes with complete and full, even lashes; the irises have been replaced. She is appropriately marked on the nape of her neck "Harriet Flanders / 1937". This is a beautiful example of this very special doll, and she is presented to you with her ORIGINAL OUTFIT -- pink cotton lawn dress, and panties tied with ribbons at the hips, and BIG PINK FLOPPY "Flower" Hat.
Ahem... now to her true condition...
She came back to me from a customer in Japan after a few years (yes, I do sometimes acquire dolls that I have sold back). Shipping was hard on her from across the seas. There is a spot on the top of her head where the compo chipped, and a smudge to the paint at the back of her head -- where I have sealed and diminished their presence. A small bit of paint wear is under the joint at the back of her neck. The charming original dress has age-related wear to the ribbons and a couple of pinholes; her big floppy bonnet -- reminds me of a flower when she wears it -- apparently got caught up in her joints while traveling and was torn in a couple of places. You can probably see where that took place and my repair.
ALL that aside, she surely does display beautifully... she is strung securely to stand and pose to your liking. Her little lamb will come along home with her. AND, you can be assured she will be packaged responsibly to arrive safely.
I have always loved this little doll, because of her story, and her impish flirty glance is endearing to the heart, wouldn't you say?It is like she is straight out of a time machine... gorgeous!
Cherub's head rotates on the neck flange easily, allowing you to place her in an 'infinite' variety of poses... really makes her little personality shine. Her body has bent arms and toddler legs -- Beautiful coloring and pink flesh tone lend this little sweetie pie all the desirable characteristics of a highly collectible doll... truly a fabulous find for those who love composition dolls.
I have included many photos for your assessment of this sweetest of baby girls... simply superb! Adorable face!
Beautiful blonde molded and painted hair is near perfection, with just one small chip in the surface that has been sealed and not much noticeable. Darling little 'clumps' of sunny yellow color array in a burst around her little head... like a halo for the little angel she is!
Replaced oilcloth moccasins have ribbon ties.... FABULOUS and a perfect fit for our Little Cherub here.
If you reference Ursala R. Mertz book, Vol. I "Collector's Encyclopedia of American Composition Dolls", you will find a dress variation to this original factory outfit on Little Cherub on page 119.
