Gorgeous 1950s 11" Tiny Tears Baby Doll ~ Miss Frances Ding Dong School Box
Gorgeous 1950s Tiny Tears baby doll by American Character is the smallest size made, standing just 11" high. She is an early, first-issue Tiny Tears with the "PAT. PEND." mark on the nape of her neck.
This lovely little baby — the most highly sought-after size Tiny Tears — comes to you in her wonderful "Miss Frances Ding Dong School" retail shoebox.
And there is a fun bit of Tiny Tears history hiding right on the box...
Miss Frances Horwich was the beloved host of Ding Dong School, one of early television's enormously popular children's programs. American Character featured her in its Tiny Tears advertising — but take a close look at the photograph on this box. The baby Miss Frances is holding is not Tiny Tears at all! She is holding the famous Lucy's Baby, another American Character doll. An amusing little advertising mix-up that seems to have gone largely unnoticed at the time.
Inside the box you'll find Tiny Tears along with a wonderful collection of her little belongings:
- Original glass nursing bottle
- Complete rubber-tipped bubble pipe
- Rubber pacifier with repaired tip
- White flannel diaper
- Tiny Tears pamphlet charmingly addressed to Tiny Tears herself
- Little heart rattle added for her display
Her wardrobe is especially nice.
Tiny Tears is dressed in her classic pink cotton dress with matching bonnet and panties, along with pink-and-white knit booties. Underneath are her white cotton knit "big girl panties" and matching single-button undershirt.
She also has her darling little flannel print kimono robe, particularly difficult to find in this tiny 11" size.
And there is another early piece here worth noting: her classic Tiny Tears romper. You'll notice that it does not have the familiar red Tiny Tears embroidery across the front. These earliest rompers were made with the plain front — a wonderful detail for the serious Tiny Tears collector.
But the real star is Baby Tiny Tears herself.
She has her original hands-down rubber body in remarkable condition — NO CRAZING, no cracks, no creases and no problems, with lovely, even-toned coloring.
Her high-color face has that beautiful porcelain-like appearance collectors love, with NO FLAWS and no paint rubs. Her brown molded curls are near perfect.
She has gorgeous clear blue sleep eyes with full, even brush lashes; they open and close perfectly. These early Tiny Tears eyes were made of metal rather than the plastic used on later issues, giving them those wonderful bright whites and sparkling blue color.
Just look at that face!
Finding an early 11" Tiny Tears is difficult enough. Finding one with this beautiful face and rubber body, accompanied by such a lovely wardrobe, accessories and her Miss Frances Ding Dong School box, is something altogether different.
