A Little Effanbee Nursery... Tucked Away for Generations
Every once in a while, a little doll comes along who seems not simply to have survived the years — but to have waited for us.
This darling petite 10" Effanbee Patsy Babykin, dating from the 1940s, was found tucked away in her original retail box together with her wonderful little wardrobe — an exceptionally charming survivor from Effanbee's beloved Patsy family.
She is the all-composition Babykin with the straight toddler-style legs, rather than the earlier drawn-up, chubby infant legs, and she retains the sweet molded Patsy-family face collectors know so well.
And perhaps best of all...Babykin still wears her original gold Effanbee paper heart tag.
Just Look at That Face...She has beautiful original blue sleep eyes that open and close properly, with wonderfully full, thick and even lashes. Her coloring is exceptional.
The soft pink flesh tone remains lovely and vibrant, with original blush still visible on her cheeks, knees, tops of her hands, chest and tummy. Her tiny rosebud mouth is bright and sweet, and those deliciously chubby cheeks give her the unmistakable Babykin expression.
Her dark chocolate-brown molded curls are especially beautiful — glossy, deeply molded and without the distracting rubs so often found on composition dolls of this age.
Her face and molded hair present beautifully.
NO REPAINTS, REPAIRS OR RESTORATION TO THE DOLL.
There is only faint, intermittent age crazing, along with a small area of paint loss at the joint on the back of one arm and beneath a couple of fingers. Please enjoy the close photographs — I have shown Babykin both dressed and undressed so her lovely condition can be appreciated.
She is appropriately marked at the nape of her neck and on her back.
Her Wonderful Original Effanbee Wardrobe
This is where this little set becomes especially delightful.
Babykin comes with the charming wardrobe that accompanied her in her box:
- White dotted Swiss ensemble — sundress, matching bonnet and panties
- Baby-pink taffeta coat and bonnet set
- Effanbee floral Dr. Denton-style pajamas
- Rayon socks
- White oilcloth tie shoes
- Original Effanbee gold paper heart tag
The white dotted Swiss ensemble had acquired dinginess from decades of storage and shelf wear. It has been carefully cleaned and refreshed and is once again wonderfully crisp and bright — just as you see it in the photographs.
And Yes... Her Box Too!
Babykin's original pink retail box accompanies her.
Time had separated/broken portions along the sides of the lid, which have been neatly taped to stabilize them and improve the presentation. The original staples that once secured the clothing inside the lid were long gone, so I added the pretty pink-and-gold star paper beneath the wardrobe and gently arranged the pieces there for display.
The star paper is my addition and is not original to the Effanbee box.
Babykin can also be found pictured in Patricia N. Schoonmaker's Patsy Doll Family Encyclopedia, Vol. II.
A Remarkable Little Survivor...
Finding a lovely Babykin is one thing.
Finding one with beautiful original coloring, gorgeous molded hair, her Effanbee wardrobe, original gold heart tag and retail box still gathered together is quite another.
At only 10", she is a tiny little time capsule from an Effanbee nursery of long ago — and one of those dolls whose charm seems entirely disproportionate to her size.
Sweet Babykin is ready for a new dolly nursery after her very long wait in the box.
